Battery storage is increasingly popular with NJ solar installations — and for good reason. Adding a home battery like the Tesla Powerwall or Enphase IQ Battery lets you store the solar energy your panels produce during the day and use it at night, during outages, or during peak-rate hours. For New Jersey homeowners, it's also a significant lead value uplift, with battery-bundled solar leads commanding $40–60 more per lead than solar alone.
The most widely recognized home battery in NJ, the Powerwall 3 offers 13.5 kWh of usable capacity with integrated inverter functionality. It's compatible with new solar installations and some existing systems. Cost in NJ runs approximately $12,000–$15,000 installed for a single unit before the 30% tax credit.
Enphase's modular battery system pairs naturally with Enphase microinverter solar installations and offers flexible capacity scaling. Popular in NJ for its reliability and monitoring capabilities. Pricing is comparable to Powerwall at similar capacity.
An increasingly popular option in NJ, Franklin WH offers high capacity and whole-home backup capability at competitive pricing. Gaining traction among NJ installers as an alternative to Powerwall.
The federal 30% ITC applies to battery storage systems of 10 kWh or more when installed in conjunction with solar (or as standalone storage). NJ does not currently have a separate state battery storage incentive program, but the federal ITC significantly reduces net battery cost. NJ's property tax exemption also covers battery storage systems installed with solar.
