How PSE&G Net Metering Works

Under New Jersey's net metering rules, PSE&G is required to offer net metering to residential solar customers. When your system produces more electricity than you use, the excess flows back to the grid and PSE&G credits your account at the retail electricity rate. You draw down those credits when your panels underperform — at night, on cloudy days, or in winter.

PSE&G customers typically receive their net metering credits as a line item on their monthly bill. At the annual true-up, any remaining net excess generation may be carried forward or compensated depending on your rate schedule.

PSE&G Interconnection: What to Expect

To go solar with PSE&G, your installer submits an interconnection application to PSE&G after your system is installed and inspected. PSE&G reviews the application and, once approved, upgrades your meter to a net metering-capable meter. Interconnection timelines with PSE&G typically run 4–8 weeks after application submission, though this varies by season and application volume.

Your installer manages the entire PSE&G interconnection process — you don't need to contact PSE&G directly.

PSE&G Solar Rates and Savings

PSE&G's residential electricity rates are consistently above the national average, which is one of the primary reasons solar has strong economics in PSE&G territory. Higher rates mean more savings per kWh your solar system produces, and a faster payback period compared to lower-rate utility territories.

PSE&G customers in NJ also qualify for all state incentive programs — the SuSI production incentive, NJ sales tax exemption, and property tax exemption — in addition to the federal 30% ITC.
